CIA Ties to Hollywood on Verge of Being Exposed

(ANTIMEDIA) An amendment added to Congress’ annual intelligence spending bill may help the public gain a better idea of the U.S. government’s relationship with Hollywood.

According to VICE News, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC), included an amendment to S. 3017 that would require the Director of National Intelligence to submit reports detailing the relationship between the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agencies and Hollywood. It would also require 15 other agencies to disclose the nature of their relationships with the film industry. These reports would have to be presented annually to congressional oversight committees.

Between 2006 and 2011, VICE reported, the CIA’s Office of Public Affairs (OPA) had a role in at least 22 of the U.S. entertainment industry’s projects. Some of the productions listed by VICE included the films Argo and Zero Dark Thirty, television shows like Top Chef and Covert Affairs, and documentaries such as the History channel’s Air America and the BBC’s The Secret War on Terror. The book, The Devil’s Light, also had the help of the CIA.

Some of the most controversial findings regarding the relationship between OPA officials and Hollywood insiders were tied to the blockbuster, Zero Dark Thirty.

According to the redacted and previously classified December 2012 CIA report released by Judicial Watch, the CIA granted “‘secret level’ access to the makers of the movie Zero Dark Thirty.” According to VICE, “filmmakers Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal showered CIA officers involved in the operation with gifts and received unprecedented access, which included the disclosure of classified information to Bigelow and Boal by CIA director Leon Panetta.”

While these revealing facts shocked the world at the time of their release, the relationship between the CIA and the entertainment industry actually dates back to the 1950s.

According to an interview with Public Radio International, Tricia Jenkins, author of The CIA in Hollywood, says that the CIA “developed a think tank to fight communist ideology, which negotiated the rights to George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ – getting a talking pig on the screen 20 years before ‘Charlotte’s Web.’” The agency pressed for “line changes in 1950s scripts to make black characters more dignified, and white characters more tolerant” in order to promote “an attractive image of America to a world picking sides in the Cold War.”

In 1996, PRI reports, the CIA employed a Hollywood liaison. Chase Brandon was the cousin of actor Tommy Lee Jones, a relationship that lent the agency a great number of valuable Hollywood connections. After Brandon was brought on, Jenkins explains, the portrayal of the CIA changed:

Before the 1990s, in films like ‘Three Days of the Condor’, the CIA was portrayed as evil, amoral assassins, or sometimes buffoons, like Max on the TV show ‘Get Smart’.

Turkey silenced 900 journos since January: Journalists’ association

The Turkish government has dismissed hundreds of journalists so far this year and blocked tens of thousands of websites since mid-2015, says an association for journalists in Turkey.

According to the report by the Press for Freedom Project (ÖiB), which is affiliated with the Turkish Journalists’ Association (TGC), at least 160 journalists were sacked in April alone, raising the number of dismissed journalists in the Anatolian country to a total of 894 since January.

The report also set the number of blocked websites at 104,904 since the Turkish general election in June 2015.

Moreover, a total of 33 reporters were arrested from January to April, it further said, adding that 12 journalists faced charges over “insulting” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Rupert Murdoch Takes Over at National Geographic, Immediately Starts Laying off Award-Winning Staff

It’s as bad as many of us feared. In spite of happy talk like, “Oh, his son will be running it and he’s different,” “Rupert wouldn’t destroy an asset like Nat Geo,” etc., the axe fell on Tuesday.

The memo went out, and November 3rd 2015 came to the National Geographic office. This was the day in which Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox took over National Geographic. The management of National Geographic sent out an email telling its staff, all of its staff, all to report to their headquarters, and wait by their phones. This pulled back every person who was in the field, every photographer, every reporter, even those on vacation had to show up on this fateful day.As these phones rang, one by one National Geographic let go the award-winning staff, and the venerable institution was no more.

The name now belongs to Rupert Murdoch, and he has plans for it. The CEO of National Geographic Society, Greg Knell, tried to claim back in September that “there won’t be an [editorial] turn in a direction that is different from the National Geographic heritage.” Murdoch’s move today only served to prove Knell’s words hollow, with hundreds of talented people now served their pink slips. And with the recognition that Murdoch’s other enterprises do not reflect the standards held by National Geographic, and with Murdoch’s history of changing the editorial direction of purchased properties, today’s move indicates that we can expect a similar shift for National Geographic.

Rupert Murdoch – National Geographic Layoffs

Since the above-quoted article made it sound as if virtually everyone was laid off, I googled and found more:

National Geographic Society sets biggest layoff in its history

The National Geographic Society of Washington will lay off about 180 of its 2,000-member workforce in a cost-cutting move that follows the sale of its famous magazine and other assets to a company controlled by Rupert Murdoch. The reduction, the largest in the organization’s 127-year history, appears to affect almost every department of the nonprofit organization, including the magazine, which the society has published since just after its founding in 1888. It also will affect people who work for the National Geographic Channel, the most profitable part of the organization. Several people in the channel’s fact-checking department, for example, were terminated on Tuesday, employees said…

In addition to the layoffs and buyouts, National Geographic Society said it would freeze its pension plan for eligible employees, eliminate medical coverage for future retirees and change its contributions to an employee 401(k) plan so that all employees receive the same percentage contribution.

National Geographic Society Sets Biggest Layoff in Its History

Other articles hint that this may just be the beginning of the layoffs. Many tweeters and FB commenters see it as the beginning of the end of Nat Geo. Typical comment: “National Geographic, 1888 – 2015. RIP.”

Mainstream ‘Journalist’ Reveals Agenda; Calls For Rape, Destruction of Syria

It is well-known among informed observers and virtually anyone that has even the smallest shred of discernment that mainstream media outlets are nothing more than the mouthpieces for their respective governments, banks, and corporations. These outlets act as a clear propaganda machine drumming up the beat for war by the presentation of clever narratives, subtle falsehoods, and outright lies.

Such deceit relies on the trust of a beguiled public who simply cannot fathom the idea that they are being lied to on such a mass scale. Indeed, the secrecy of the true agenda is what gives propaganda its power. So it is very rare that mainstream outlets, their “journalists,” or other major figures openly state the agenda that is behind their reporting and gives purpose to their every word.

But this is exactly what Robert Caruso of the Boston Globe, Huffington Post, The Guardian, Daily Beast, The Jerusalem Post, and other mainstream outlets did in a fit of rage yesterday evening.

Caruso is well known for his hardcore adherence to the absurd notion that Bashar al-Assad is committing atrocities against the Syrian people, that there is such a thing as “moderate rebels,” and that the U.S. and its NATO allies should arm terrorists and engage in military operations inside Syria.

The statements come after a Twitter fight erupted between himself and Mimi al-Laham, (aka SyrianGirl), a Syrian activist and geopolitical analyst who has been critical of the role the West has played in funding, directing, arming, and controlling terrorists for the purposes of destroying the secular government of Bashar al-Assad.

The two traded barbs for some time. During their back and forth, however, Caruso made the statement, “@Partisangirl I’m enjoying this conversation. I will enjoy your beloved Syria being torn apart with violence and Assad in exile even more.

Caruso’s response, of course, was in no way out of character. Caruso has Tweeted similar ideas in the past:

Responding to a Twitter user in 2011, Caruso Tweeted:

Normally, the social media ravings of a hack journalist that writes for discredited media outlets would not draw attention. But Caruso’s statements, befitting of a bloodthirsty warmonger, should be seen as illuminating of the general mode of thought that pervades mainstream outlets in regards to foreign wars and imperialism.

While generally hiding under the guise of a desire to “protect civilians” and “spread democracy,” the true aims are the destruction of a secular government, displacement of a people, and the expansion of empire across the globe. While low-level worker bees like Caruso undoubtedly shill with pleasure for money, considering the wages paid by a number of these outlets, a soul can be bought for a relatively small amount of money these days.

Project Censored exposes top 25 most censored news stories of 2013-2014

Every year, Project Censored performs a valuable public service by researching and compiling a list of the most censored and under-reported news stories in the United States.

Started at Sonoma State University in 1976 and carried on by the Media Freedom Foundation since 2000, the project involves professors and students and journalists.

“During this year’s cycle, Project Censored reviewed 237 Validated Independent News stories (VINs) representing the collective efforts of 260 college students and 49 professors from 18 college and university campuses that participate in our affiliate program,” the project website states.

Here’s Project Censored’s list of the top 25 most censored news stories of 2013-2014:
